What was it this time?\u201d, I asked\namazed at this kid\u2019s creativity with getting rid of his glasses. Viraj turned his\ngaze away and smiled naughtily. Well, Viraj isn\u2019t alone\u2026 a lot of children are\naverse to glasses. So how do you get your kld to wear glasses? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A child\u2019s first impression is often based off his parents\u2019.\nIf they notice how you\u2019re upset or disappointed that their kid has to wear glasses,\nthat\u2019s the opinion they will form. Have a positive and encouraging attitude, it\nis sure to rub off on your child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preparing your kid beforehand also helps. You may do this\nthrough video stories or books about wearing glasses. When your child is old\nenough to understand, point out to a parent or aunt or characters (Harry\nPotter) who wear glasses. Pointing out celebrities might work for older kids\nand help them get an idea of the style that they want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If just explaining how glasses will help them see better\ndoesn\u2019t work for younger kids, playing it up (a new super power, a magic tool,\na new gadget from Doraemon) might work! Make sure your child\u2019s first time\ntrying on glasses is when they are rested and in a good mood. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially let your child wear their spectacles for short\nperiods when they are doing something that they enjoy \u2013 watching their\nfavourite TV show or reading their favourite book. This will help your kid to\nrealise how their new glasses add value to their fun times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Right Glasses<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Make shopping for glasses an enjoyable experience and a\nhappy memory. Once you have narrowed down a few spectacles in your budget, let\nthe choice of the colour and style be your kid\u2019s choice. It\u2019s okay if the\nglasses your kids pick are not exactly according to your taste. Your child is\nmore likely to proudly wear what they have picked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For older kids, it may be worthwhile to buy a few pairs that\nthey can match to different outfits so that they look at their glasses as a\nfashion accessory. You may also take them shopping later to buy a new outfit to\nmatch their new glasses or get them a new haircut. This \u201cmakeover day\u201d will\nensure that a positive experience is created around their new accessory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s face it, we often do buy clothes and toys that our\nkids will \u201cgrow into\u201d. Avoid doing it for the glasses. Buy frames that fit your\nchild right now. Your kid is less likely to wear them if they are\nuncomfortable. The glasses should not pinch, slip or put pressure on your\nchild\u2019s face.  Most spectacle frames for\nkids come with elastic bands that go around their head to keep the glasses in\nplace. Plastic frames do not break even if your child chews them, drops them or\neven sits on them. Polycarbonate lenses are a safer and lighter option\nespecially for kids who are involved in active sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can begin with baby steps \u2013 fifteen minutes of glasses\ninitially followed by a gradual increase in eye wear time slowly may work with\nsome kids. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long it takes for your kid to take to their glasses\nreally varies from child to child. Some kids may take a week while some other\npersistent ones may even take a month. If they throw too big a tantrum, take it\noff for a while, but do put it back once they are in a good mood. But\nconsistently make sure that wearing glasses is non-negotiable \u2013 just like\nstaying away from hot surfaces. Not wearing prescribed glasses may leave\npermanent damage especially in children under five years of age. It\u2019s a\ndelicate balance between avoiding the temptation to nag and being firm! (That\u2019s\ntrue for parenting as a whole, isn\u2019t it?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some parents find that keeping their toddlers\u2019 hands busy\nmakes them forget about this \u2018other toy\u2019 on their nose. Toddlers are more\nlikely to throw off their glasses when they are bored with nothing else to do. When\nyour baby throws them off, stay calm and just put them back on with a smile. We\nknow it is a big deal, but try to pretend as if it\u2019s not one. Make it a part of\ntheir routine \u2013 it\u2019s just something they have to put on along with their\nclothes every morning and take off at bed time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finding out why your kid doesn\u2019t want to wear glasses is\ncrucial too. Though kids now-a-days are much more open about glasses (as\ncompared to our times), if teasing is an issue at school, teaching the kid to\nignore the teasing may help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your child is inconsistent with wearing glasses, it is a\ngood idea to check if the glasses are well centred or not and whether the\nglasses have been made according to the prescription. Incorrectly placed lenses\ncan also lead to a child not accepting their glasses.
